Chapter 58: A Bargain of Necessity

The NBC debacle and my newly discovered love of Wil Wheaton's blog, podcasts, and storytelling...has made me think a lot about my thoughts on entertainment production. It seems pretty clear to me that independent production is the way to go.

These days, if you educate yourself well enough, you can end up creating anything you want with your own skills, time, and money...and make stuff about as good or better than network television or even some film studios. If you are smart, you limit your budget and ambitions...create realistic ambitions with realistic budgets...you can do a lot more when not being bound by studios and businessmen pushing you around and censoring your ideas. Things should remain collaborative, because working with others is a good idea builder...but even that rule is negotiable.

I don't know. I kind of like writing, and I'd like to get better at it, lord knows my creative writing class didn't build my skills as well as I had hoped it would. I'm going to use this blog to work on those skills though. I think this lulu thing is pretty interesting. Wil Wheaton uses lulu to publish his work, its a print on demand service. So the book isn't printed unless someone orders it. That sounds both enviromentally friendly and makes a lot more sense in today's world.

I want to continue creating some kind of videos for my YouTube Page for that creative outlet. Maybe try making some animations, or short films, or an online sitcom. YouTube really has changed who can get out their with visual work.

I'm really interested in starting a Podcast of some kind. Listening to NPR podcasts of their great programming, as well as Wheaton's stuff...I've just been thinking that a weekly podcast might be fun. He always mentioned this Creative Commons license, which I'm interested in looking up on.

The internet changed everything...and entertainment in almost all fields can now be published by anyone anywhere and for anyone anywhere. Its an amazing new world.

I have completed my reviews of Torchwood tonight, check them out. I now have every story, even some non canon stuff, from the very first Doctor Who through the dalek films to the last episodes of David Tennant and all the spin offs of the new series now revied in one blog. I'm completely ready for the all new upcoming Series 5 of Doctor Who...with a brand spanking new Doctor!
